Who this helps

Anyone who bought goods or hired services for their own use, including online purchases. Common matters include:

  • defective cars, two-wheelers, mobile phones, electronics and home appliances
  • delayed possession, poor construction or hidden charges by builders and promoters
  • rejected or short-paid health, motor, life and fire insurance claims
  • online shopping: wrong, fake or defective products and refunds not received
  • banks, credit cards and loans: wrong charges, failed transactions and fraud
  • airline, travel, tour package and courier services
  • hospital and medical services, including billing disputes
  • telecom, internet and electricity services
  • gold jewellery purity and short weight
  • coaching centres (schools, colleges and universities are generally outside the Act)

How we handle it, step by step

  1. Review and assessment

We go through your bills, warranty cards, agreements, emails and chat records, check that you are a consumer under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and confirm the complaint is within time. A complaint must generally be filed within two years of the cause of action.

  2. Legal notice

We send a notice to the seller or service provider setting out the defect or deficiency, the relief you want and a reasonable time to respond. Some disputes are resolved at this stage, and the notice becomes useful evidence if they are not.

  3. Pre-litigation settlement

If the other side responds, we negotiate for repair, replacement, refund or compensation, and record any settlement in writing so it can be enforced.

  4. Filing before the right Commission

If settlement fails, we draft and file the complaint, online through the e-Jagriti portal or in person. The forum depends on the value of the goods or services paid for: the District Commission up to ₹50 lakh, the State Commission above ₹50 lakh and up to ₹2 crore, and the National Commission above ₹2 crore.

You can file where you live or work, so a Coimbatore resident can usually file before the District Commission in Coimbatore even against a company based elsewhere.

  5. Hearings and mediation

The Commission issues notice to the opposite party, who files a reply, and evidence is usually given by affidavit. If both sides agree and settlement looks possible, the Commission can refer the dispute to mediation, and a settlement reached there is recorded as its order.

  6. Order, appeal and execution

We follow up on compliance with the final order, and apply to the Commission for execution if it is not obeyed. Appeals have short deadlines, so we advise on them as soon as an order is passed.

Consumer court in Coimbatore: common questions

Where do I file a consumer complaint in Coimbatore?

Before the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Coimbatore, often called the consumer court or consumer forum, if the amount you paid is up to ₹50 lakh, the limit fixed by the Consumer Protection (Jurisdiction of the District Commission, the State Commission and the National Commission) Rules, 2021. This covers residents across Coimbatore district, including Pollachi, Mettupalayam, Sulur, Annur, Kinathukadavu, Madukkarai, Perur and Valparai. You can file online on e-Jagriti. See filing online on e-Jagriti.

Can I file in Coimbatore against a company based in Chennai, Bengaluru or elsewhere?

Yes. Under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, you can file where you live or personally work for gain, so a Coimbatore resident can usually file in Coimbatore against an online platform, insurer, bank or builder based anywhere in India.

How much does it cost to file a consumer case?

There is no filing fee where the amount paid is up to ₹5 lakh. Above that, the fee ranges from ₹200 to ₹7,500 depending on the amount. See the full fee table.

What is the time limit for a consumer complaint?

Two years from the date the cause of action arose. A later complaint is admitted only if the Commission accepts that there was sufficient cause for the delay.

Do I need a lawyer for a consumer case?

No. A consumer can file and argue their own case. An advocate helps with the legal notice, drafting, evidence and arguments, particularly in larger or contested cases.

How long does a consumer case take?

The Act asks the Commission to try to decide a complaint within three months of notice to the opposite party, or five months where goods are tested. Many cases take longer. Disputes settled at the legal notice or mediation stage end much sooner.

What compensation can the consumer court award?

A refund with interest, replacement or repair, compensation for loss and, in suitable cases, mental agony, punitive damages and costs. See compensation in consumer cases.
