How to file a consumer complaint online on e-Jagriti
Step-by-step guide to filing a consumer complaint online on the e-Jagriti portal: registration, documents to upload, fee payment, tracking and online hearings.
In short
e-Jagriti (e-jagriti.gov.in) is the government’s online filing system for all Consumer Commissions. You register with your mobile number, fill in the complaint, upload it with your documents as PDFs, pay any fee online and track the case. You do not need a lawyer to file.
e-Jagriti was launched in January 2025. It brought e-Daakhil and the Commissions’ earlier case systems together on one portal, used by the District, State and National Commissions. Notices, case status and many hearings are now handled through it.
Before you start
- Send a legal notice and give the other side a fair chance to respond. See how to write a consumer legal notice.
- Check that you are within the two-year time limit and work out which Commission hears your case. See fees, time limits and appeals.
- Find the exact legal name and address of each opposite party, usually from the invoice, the agreement or the company’s website.
Documents to prepare as PDFs
- The complaint itself, signed: your details, the opposite parties, the facts in date order, how the Commission has jurisdiction, and the relief you want
- An affidavit supporting the complaint
- Proof of payment: bill, invoice, receipt or bank statement
- The warranty card, agreement or policy document
- Emails, chats, complaint numbers and photos
- Your legal notice, its postal or email proof, and any reply
- An index listing the documents, with page numbers
Scan pages clearly and in order. A file that cannot be read is a common reason for the registry to return a complaint for correction.
Step by step
- Register. Sign up on e-Jagriti as a consumer (or as an advocate, if one is filing for you), verifying your mobile number with an OTP.
- Start a new complaint. Log in and choose to file a new case.
- Choose the Commission. Select the state and the District Commission. You can file where you live or work, where the opposite party does business, or where the problem arose. A Coimbatore resident can usually file in Coimbatore.
- Enter the details. Add yourself, each opposite party with full address, the amount you paid, the compensation you claim and a short summary of the facts.
- Upload. Attach the complaint, affidavit, documents and index.
- Pay the fee. If the value you paid is above ₹5 lakh, pay the fee online. Up to ₹5 lakh there is no fee.
- Submit and note the reference number. The Commission’s registry checks the filing and may ask you to correct defects.
- Track and attend. Watch for SMS and email alerts, check the case status and cause list on the portal, and attend hearings, some of which are held by video.
After filing
The Commission decides whether to admit the complaint, ideally within 21 days, and then sends notice to the opposite party, who has up to 45 days to reply. Evidence is usually given by affidavit, followed by arguments. If both sides agree, the Commission can refer the dispute to mediation.
Tips
- Join everyone responsible: for a defective product, both the seller and the manufacturer; for an online order, the platform and the seller.
- Ask for specific reliefs with amounts: refund, replacement, compensation and costs.
- Keep your original documents safe. The Commission may ask to see them.
- Non-resident Indians can also file and attend hearings through the portal.
